Sphynx Cat Breed Information and Maintenance

The Sphynx cat, also known as the Canadian hairless or Canadian Sphynx, is a unique breed known for its lack of fur. This genetic mutation has been preserved through selective breeding efforts. Despite their appearance, Sphynx cats have a high body temperature and active metabolism, leading to playful behavior. They require regular bathing to prevent greasy skin, and owners must protect them from extreme temperatures and sunburn. These cats are known for their friendly and affectionate nature, making them great companions for those seeking constant companionship.

History

In Toronto, Canada, a pet cat gave birth to a hairless kitten in 1966. The Sphynx cat as we know it today was created as the result of what was later determined to be a spontaneous genetic mutation. This cat and a select few other naturally hairless cats, created by Mother Earth, are the ancestors of this rare breed. For more than 30 years, cat breeders in North America and Europe have crossed the Sphynx with cats with normal coats and then back with hairless cats. This kind of selective breeding was done to produce a cat with a robust hybrid gene pool and excellent genetics.

Size

The medium-sized cat known as the sphynx is distinctive due to its hairless skin, wrinkly ears, and stunning look. She is large for her stature, with a lean, muscular frame that is thick and weighty. These cats range in size from 6 to 14 pounds for males and 6 to 9 pounds for females, making them medium-sized. The Sphynx matures sexually after roughly a year. It has a nine to fifteen year lifespan.

Personality

Like Siamese cat, Sphynx are active, extremely clever, curious, and loving cats. Many people have compared Sphynx to dogs in terms of how friendly they are to both family and strangers. They are highly talkative, want to be the center of attention, and will want to be engaged in everything you do to the point that they could annoy you or get in the way. They like the company of other animals and are quite social, especially Sphynx cats. Given the slightest opportunity, they prefer slipping beneath the duvet because they like to stay warm.

Food

Sphynx cats like eating, as seen by their potbellies. Most people will take anything you give them. However, you should still watch their diet carefully and make sure they don’t put on too much weight. Because of their fast metabolism and delicate digestive systems, sphynx cats do best with little meals spaced out throughout the day. This method of serving food keeps cats from becoming disinterested in their meals as well. It basically comes down to personal taste whether you feed your cat an all-kibble diet, an all-canned diet, or a combination of the two. Additionally, you may give your cat snacks that will keep its teeth clean, gums healthy, and help decrease the likelihood of hairballs.

Grooming

You should probably think again if you want a Sphynx cat because you believe you won’t have to spend much time grooming him. To avoid clogged pores and greasy stains on your furnishings or clothing, his body gets oily and has to be washed anywhere from weekly to monthly. The Sphynx requires routine dental care, eye and ear cleaning, and nail trimming much like any other cat. Their claws can accumulate wax, which needs to be removed on a regular basis. Additionally, it’s important to clean any accumulated mucus out of their eyes. The waxy buildup in the ears can also be removed by routine cleaning with cotton and a mild ear cleaning solution that your vet may suggest. For complete health and fresh breath, brush the teeth using pet mouthwash.

Training

This breed is highly intelligent and learns tricks more quickly than other breeds. Start by holding consistent litter training sessions. Although it is always preferable to start from beginning to ensure your pet has learnt the basics, your local breeder will often have taught the pet on a few important things when you get a kitten from him. Sphynx cats are very lively and will use all of their cunning to catch your eye. Therefore, you do not need to set aside certain times to take your pet for a fast walk. Prepare to exercise yourself if you are more restricted to your couch.

Health

Sphynx cat breeds have some documented health problems, including a potential for developing cardiac conditions such hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Congenital myasthenic syndrome is a hereditary neuromuscular condition that can affect some Sphynx. Additionally susceptible to periodontal disease, these cats require frequent cleaning. Because skin irritation can occur more frequently with these cats than with cats with fur, they require a little more care. Get a health insurance to lower costs and visit your veterinarian for routine examinations.

Bottom Line

The Sphynx may be good for people who want an extreme cat that needs more care than the ordinary cat, but they are not great with very small children and they do need access to a variety of warm places, beds to cuddle in, and heating on in cooler weather. Not for the cold house that has all the windows and doors open all year long!

This breed likes playing, leaping, and climbing in addition to the typical cat scratching. There should be places to climb and perch, as well as scratching surfaces. It’s a good idea to adopt two cats if you frequently travel for business so they can amuse one another.

In reality, Sphynx cat breed is highly amiable with people. They enjoy being the center of attention in all situations and are naturally passionate and energetic. No matter what else is on the master’s mind at the time, Sphynx constantly strives to get his attention. These cats stand out from other cats due to their characteristic.
